Bronny, I am looking
Bronny, I am looking foawrrd to receiving the electronic copy of your new book and we will put information about it on the website that a librarian has started. Now that conferences are over for the spring for me, I will now start working on the website next week as well. We want people to know about the books that are currently available! The American Library association now honors the Stonewall awardees. In 2010 the winner was for a young adult book and 3/5 honor books were for young children. The honor books however will not get a medal/seal on them only the winner.STONEWALL BOOK AWARDS 2010CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE AWARDWinner: The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd (Penguin Group)Honor Books: 10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewert (Seven Stories Press)Daddy, Papa and Me / Mommy, Mama and Me by Leslea Newman and Carol Thompson (illustrator) (Tricycle Press)Gay America: Struggle for Equality by Linas Alsenas (Amulet Books)Sprout by Dale Peck (Bloomsbury USAIt is hard to get the gay friendly books into many libraries and having the ALA honor this award is a plus. The award for children-young adults is too broad. In the past the Lambda awards that included this span nearly always went to books for “young adults”. I tried to get Lambda to make a young children’s award and am trying to compose a letter today to ALA to see if they would. In 2011 Almost Perfect won.. It’s about a young h.s. student and his transgender girl friend. It is very well done but of course for older youths. No books for young children were honored in any way but in 2010 I have only located one book that was published in the USA and distributed for sale. I often find books later that did come out and I wasn’t aware of until later.Thank you for writing your book. We need more glt friendly picture books for young children so that children from same sex or transgender parented families can see their own special family in a book and that children from other types of families can begin to know more about gay, lesbian, and transgender people and families. This knowledge can often lead to understanding so that both in early childhood and later in life they will stick up for people who are being teased or bullied about their family members of themselves. So keep up the wonderful work.Liz by Milagro posted on Friday, September 18, 2015
